The AKM (Russian: Автомат Калашникова Модернизированный , Avtomat Kalashnikova Modernizirovannyi ) is a modernized version of the AK-47 assault rifle, produced in significantly larger numbers than the original AK-47. Production of the weapon began in 1959 and was in mass production until the transition to the AK-74 rifle. The AKMS is a folding-stock version of the rifle intended for airborne and armored forces.
The main difference from the AK-47 rifle is the pressed-plate frame instead of the previous milled one. Minor differences include a redesigned front sight, shifter, box cover, and a spoon-shaped compensator in the barrel. The rear sight adjustment range was also changed from 800 meters to 1,000 meters. At a later stage, pistol grips began to be made of bakelite instead of wooden ones; bakelite magazines were also produced in addition to all-metal ones. Functionally, the weapon is the same as its predecessor, the AK-47. Like the AK-47, the AKM uses 7.62×39 mm cartridges, and the weapon's magazines are compatible with the AK-47 and RPK submachine guns.
The weapon has been manufactured and exported to several countries, and along with its copies, it is the most commonly found Kalashnikov series weapon. Although the AKM is no longer an official service weapon of the Russian Armed Forces, it is still used. The reason for this is the 7.62×39 mm cartridge's perceived superior penetration to the 5.45×39 mm cartridge used in the AK-74.
